Bothie Campers x ITADAKI Gluten-Free Project

Because gluten-free adventures shouldn’t stop at the city limits.

Bothie Campers has partnered with the ITADAKI Gluten-Free Project to make gluten-free travel in Japan’s countryside not just possible, but enjoyable.

While managing gluten in cities like Tokyo is getting easier, it can be incredibly difficult in rural areas - where English is rare, ingredients aren’t always clear, and dietary needs are often misunderstood.

Since Bothie Campers is dedicated to helping travellers explore the regions - through camping, roadtrips, and slow travel - we knew we needed practical tools for those heading off the beaten path.

That’s where the Bothie x ITADAKI field guides & translation cards come in.

Let’s make your next meal an experience, not a negotiation.

  • We’ve created a set of clear, culturally sensitive Japanese dining aids designed specifically for gluten-sensitive travelers. These are simple digital files, made to be shown directly on your phone screen to restaurant staff - no printing, no explaining, no stress.

Each file includes easy-to-read Japanese explanations of gluten sensitivity and common ingredients to avoid. A quick ‘How-To’ guide is also included so you can flick through, check details, and feel confident in every meal situation.

  • We’ve done our best to make gluten-free travel in Japan easier, but no guide or translation tool can offer 100% protection.

In Japan, barley and rye aren’t always clearly labelled, cross-contamination happens (especially in small kitchens), and even the best communication can sometimes be misunderstood. That means that, even with careful planning and polite explanations, mistakes can still happen.

These tools were written and edited by native English and Japanese speakers, and developed in collaboration with Japanese chefs, restaurant owners, and travellers with gluten sensitivity. We’ve worked hard to make them accurate, practical, and culturally respectful—but they’re still just tools.

They’re designed to help you make more informed choices, but they’re not a substitute for medical advice. If you have diagnosed coeliac disease or cannot tolerate even trace amounts of gluten, please use these resources with caution and in line with your doctor’s advice.

By using these guides, you acknowledge that you’re doing so at your own risk.

Your safety matters—and we believe good travel starts with clear information, realistic expectations, and your own judgment.
