Kamikochi Valley (上高地)
Flat trails, soaring peaks, and crystal-clear rivers.
A jewel of Chubu Sangaku National Park, Kamikochi is one of Japan’s most stunning natural areas. Famous for its turquoise rivers, larch forests, and towering mountains, it’s ideal for easy day hikes or more ambitious alpine trekking.
About the name: Kami (上) means upper or above, kō (高) means high, and chi (地) means land.
“Upper highlands” is spot on for this cool, cloud-draped alpine basin. Come for the hiking cred, stay for the river mist and wooden huts.
Stay: Return to Hirayu or camp overnight at a mountain hut
